Kate Humble was rescued on 18th July 2011
On Monday 18th July 2011 we received a telephone call from a gentleman about a seal at Porthtowan. We contacted Dan, a member of our Animal Care Team, who was on days holiday and volunteering as a member of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), we asked him to go out and take a look at the seal.

Dan was a little bit more than surprised to find a two day old baby seal pup on the beach. The pup had been abandoned by it´s mother, so it was brought back to the Sanctuary and put into hospital pen 2. The pup was found to be in good body condition and weighed in at 15 kilos, we have called the pup (Kate) Humble.
Kate Humble was chosen by Jenny Lewis. Jenny said "I grew up watching Kate Humble on TV on nature and wildlife programmes; it was through watching these programmes that I developed my love of wildlife and conservation which eventually led me to becoming a member of the Animal Care Team here
at the National Seal Sanctuary."

Update: 30th July 2011 - Humble is doing well, now fully moulted (photo right) and has a washing up bowl in her hospital pen to learn that fish live in water.

Update: 28th September 2011 - Humble is getting better at feeding in the convalescent pool and with Fred now released back into the wild, she will hopefully be putting on more weight as at the moment Humble weighs in at 28 kilos which should take around a month or so and Humble can spend Christmas back out in the wild.

Update: 23rd November 2011 - On Friday 11th November 2011 it was time to release Kate Humble back to the wild.

Weighing in at 48 kilos she is more than ready to be released and we were waiting on clear weather, plus the fish bill was increasing.

Kate Humble on 11th November 2011 With high tide at 10am Humble was loaded into a cage and taken back to Porthtowan the beach where she was originally rescued from.

On the beach the cage was taken to the water´s edge and the door opened, and the tide came in to meet her, she was out the cage and straight in to the water but it did take a little while for her to get over the breakers and out into open sea.
