Pumpkin celebrates his 6th Birthday with
a fantastic fish cake!

Resident grey seal Pumpkin, who was born on Halloween, celebrated his 6th birthday today with a fantastic ice-fish cake made by Natalie Dyer, head of enrichment and animal care team member at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.

Pumpkin was rescued in Guernsey by the GSPCA and was transferred to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary on the 18th November 2010 for his next stage of rehabilitation and to learn to compete for fish with other seals.

Natalie decided to make Pumpkin a very special birthday cake, as it is Halloween and also his 6th Birthday, using ice, fish and food colouring to make it bright and colourful!
The team will regularly use ice blocks as enrichment for the resident grey seals as it is important to keep the residents stimulated and it also helps the team with training.

"I´m really happy with how the cake turned out and how much Pumpkin enjoyed playing with it" said Natalie Dyer, who is head of enrichment at the Sanctuary.

"I decided to make him an extra special cake as it is his birthday and also Halloween!" Natalie said.

This is not only great for the animals; it also helps the team look after them as it allows them to carry out the regular daily checks required.
"Pumpkin never ceases to surprise us with his playful nature and we are always trying different ways of providing him with fun enrichment."

"During the 2016 Euro´s, Pumpkin was learning how to score goals with a football!" Natalie Dyer said.
