The Seal Sanctuary prepares for the pitter patter
of tiny flippers
Staff at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary are waiting with bated breath for the birth of a baby Common Seal pup who is due to arrive in June.

Father Babyface, who is suspected to be the oldest male common seal in the UK at 32 years of age and mother Luna who is 14 years his junior have been courting since Babyface moved to the Sanctuary in 2010. Babyface, who only has one eye, was transferred to the Sanctuary from Colchester Zoo after his previous partner Jasmine passed away.

Tamara Cooper, the Sanctuary´s Animal Care Supervisor, said: "It was a shock to all to find Luna was pregnant given Babyface´s age."    (Luna photo right)

Tamara Cooper, the Sanctuary´s Animal Care Supervisor, said: "It was a shock to all to find Luna was pregnant given Babyface´s age.

Our priority is to ensure Luna and her bump are carefully watched and given lots of TLC. We´ve increased her daily food amounts as she is feeding for two, and we´re doing her target training in the water to avoid any unnecessary strain."

Seals have a gestation period of eleven and a half months, and as Luna´s due date looms, Babyface is always seen close by her side.
