EVE - Rescued on 17th November 2006

The Sanctuary was called on the morning of Friday 17th of November 2006 about a pup that was on a beach at Polurrian Cove near Mullion. The pup was described as a little white coat pup, that was making a lot of noise. Abi, a member of the Animal Care Team, headed out to Mullion to investigate the pup. When Abi arrived the tide was on the way in, and so after assessing the situation, she decided that if the mum was nearby to give the pup a chance, she would leave it where it was and monitor. After a few hours and no sign of mum, with the tide coming in fast, we made the decision to bring the seal back to Gweek. Photo of Eve was taken on 17th November 2006 by Rachael Vine

This pup weighed only 11.5 kilos and still had umbilici. It also may have a possible scratch to the eye. The pup is around 4 days old and still has the white coat. It will be given fluids for the first 24 hours and will then move on to multi milk, this milk has a high fat content, and will help the pup put on weight quickly. The pup is a little girl and so we have called her Eve, this is because when Abi went to check what sex it was on the beach, she had to remove a little leaf from her bottom.
Hospital Update: 24th November 2006 - Eve still has her white coat and will be on multi milk for at least another week. Eve is a very needy seal and likes company. The wound on her chin is healing and she likes to remind the Animal Care Team when it is feeding time. Eve can be heard shouting from outside the hospital.Eve in the isolation pen in the hospital - photo was taken on 24th November 2006 by Rachael Vine
Eve in the main hospital - photo was taken on 1st December 2006 by Rachael Vine Hospital Update: 1st December 2006 - Eve has started on fish, but seems to be more interested in biting the Animal Care Team’s wellington boots. She has also been moved through to the main hospital.
Hospital Update: 15th December 2006 - Eve was moved out of the hospital and down to the nursery pool, she was a little bit scared and spent the first few days in the cave. She only weighs 12 kilos but being in this pool should encourage her to feed for herself but the Animal Care Team will keep an eye on Eve.

Hospital Update: 12th January 2007 - Eve is continuing to improve on a daily basis and is now happy to catch and eat her fish all by herself, even if it is a little messy. She is still in the outside nursery pool.
Hospital Update: 19th January 2007 - Eve has now been moved back up to the hospital, as she has quite a nasty eye infection. The Animal Care Team moved her back so they can treat the eye in a dry pen; this makes the medication more affective, and should heal much quicker.
Hospital Update: 26th January 2007 - Eve is now back in the isolation pen, she is having an extra feed to try and put some weight on, she is also being given fluids first thing in the morning. Her eye is healing slowly, and should heal quicker now we have changed her medication.
Hospital Update: 3rd February 2007 - Eve has had a visit from the vet who has changed her antibiotics and her eye is now improving, and she is also starting to put on weight, she will be weighed next week.Eve in the isolation pen in the hospital
