Cyclops - Rescued on 24th January 2007

As soon as Maz came back with the land rover on Wednesday 24th of January 2007 from her rescue of Tigger, then it was time for Clare with the help of Rachael and a volunteer to head out on another pup that had been reported at Mousehole. When Clare and Rachael arrived on the beach, the seal could not be seen, and no marks on the sand revealed it had gone back in the water.
Cyclops on the beach on 24th January 2007 - photo was taken by Rachael VineAfter standing at the top of the beach and looking at all the different shapes and colours of rock, we saw one of the rocks breathe. Knowing that rocks do not breathe, we came to the conclusion it was the seal we had been searching for. The seal was dehydrated and its right eye had an infection, it had very laboured breathing, and a green discharge from its nose and mouth.
It was quickly caged and taken back to the Sanctuary, where it was given a full clinical assessment. The seal weighed 19.5 kilos, and an eye drops were given to open up the eye to see what was causing the problem. Its breathing was getting a little worst so a course of drugs were given, and a lot of praying.
The seal is a little boy and has been called Cyclops.

Cyclops in the isolation pen in the hospital Hospital update: 3rd February 2007 - Cyclops also had a change of antibiotics and has now got less of a runny nose, and a change in eye drops also sees his eye sight improving. He is also now self-feeding and loves his fish. The only thing is he tries to escape every morning when the Animal Care Team cleans out his pen. Cyclops's orange flipper tag number is 40. Hospital Update : 16th March 2007 - At the beginning of the week, Cyclops was going a little bit nuts on his own, so the Animal Care Team put him in with Cinders, as we were waiting on the second bloods to be clear before moving them both to the outside pool. Bloods came back clear and so on Wednesday (14th March 2007) Cinders and Cyclops were taken down to the outside Common Pool.
Hospital Update: 23rd March 2007 - Cyclops has now been moved from the common seal pool into the convalescence pool.
