Cubert - Rescued on 23rd February 2008

Cubert On 23rd of February 2008, we received a call about a seal in Newquay. The team went out and found a very malnourished pup on the beach, and decided to bring it back to the Sanctuary. Back at the Sanctuary the pup was weighed and found to be only 18.5 kilos, this pup is around 4 months old and at that age should be around double that weight. The pup was very malnourished and dehydrated a few wounds and worn teeth. His wounds were cleaned and he was given fluid, to rehydrate him. Normally with pups they would have just 24 hours of fluids but with this one he was very dehydrated and so he was given fluids for another 24 hours. He has been named Cubert.
Update: 29th February 2008 - Cubert is now eating fish and feeling a lot better and is brighter. He has managed to put on 0.5 kilos but will need to put on another 5 kilos before being moved to the nursery pool.
Update: 7th March 2008 - Cubert took a bit of a funny turn at the weekend and had to be put on a drip. He is now back to eating fish three times a day and having additional treatment of fluids to flush the infection out of his body.

Update: 2nd May 2008 - Cubert is back in the hospital pen number 3, after his short time in the outside nursery pool, due to him dropping 3 kilos in weight.
Update: 16th May 2008 - Cubert was finally moved down to the nursery pool 2 earliert this week, unfortunately we forgot to close the gate at the other end and he swam through the water and straight into the convalescent pool, where we had no hope of catching him again. Cubert is doing well in the convalescent pool, he has a lot more confident, and lots to get more then his fair share at feeding time. He also likes to try and bite the Animal Care Team during the 11am and 2pm talks.
