BELLE - Rescued on 19th December 2006

Photo of Belle was taken by Rachael Vine on 19th December 2006On Tuesday morning (19th of December 2006) the sanctuary received a call from a lady who had found a seal on the beach at Sennen Cove, and was concerned about it. Clare grabbed the seal rescue kit and cage and headed out to Sennen. When she arrived she found the pup on the beach which was already moulted with injuries all over its body. From the foot prints around the seal it looked like sea gulls had been pecking at this poor pup, and the seal was too weak to defend itself.
Clare did a quick assessment and brought the seal pup back to the Sanctuary. As the hospital was full, the animal care team put the pup into our temporary pen. Here the Animal Care Team did a full clinical assessment and found the pup to be very malnourished and weighed only 11 kilos. Her wounds were cleaned and treated, and she was put on a course of antibiotics, the Animal Care Team also suspected that the pup had worms as it was coughing, so they also treated this. The pup is a little girl and has been named Belle. Photo of Belle was taken by Rachael Vine on 19th December 2006

Hospital Update: 12th January 2007 - Belle has now had her second bloods taken and is off treatment and wounds are healing. Once she is confident at catching her fish in the water and her blood results come back clear, she will be moved outside to join the other seal pups shortly.
Hospital Update: 19th January 2007 - Belle along with Bambi and Rhubarb have joined Flotsam, Jetsam and Little Ed, our Common Seals, in their enclosure for the moment. They all seem to be enjoying the new bigger pool. However, Flotsam and Jetsam are scared of the new arrivals and are keeping to the other end of the pool. Both are trying to be brave and getting closer to the pups, but are still not confident. Little Ed seems not to have noticed and is still doing hand stands. The pups are having a great time causing chaos, when Flot and Jet get too close to them, the pups chase them - they think it is great fun.

Update: 24th April 2007 - On Friday 20th of April 2007 at 7am Belle along with Ariel, Nemo, Spongebob, Tigger and Bambi were loaded up into the trailer for their release back into the wild, and we headed out to Gwithian. We arrived after a very bumpy journey (seals getting excited about the sea air) to find the water flat and calm. As soon as the trailer door was down, all six were off, with Ariel leading the way, two stayed around for about 10 minutes before finally disappearing around the coast. All in the trailer
