Giant Japanese Spider Crab
The appearance of the Giant Japanese Spider Crab (Macrocheira kaempferi) served as the inspiration for the machines which invaded the Earth in the 1953 film The War of the Worlds. The crab has a gentle disposition in spite of it´s ferocious appearance.

Spider crabs feed on shellfish and animal carcasses. When fully grown a Japanese Spider Crab can reach 3.8 metres from claw to claw. Big enough to stand over a small car. These crabs are mostly found off the southern coasts of the Japenese Island of Honshu, at depths between 50 metres and 600 metres.
