DIVA SEAL CELEBRATES 30TH BIRTHDAY
Diva Seal Snoopy a resident Grey Seal at the National Seal Sanctuary in Gweek, Cornwall will this January 29th celebrate her 30th birthday.

Snoopy has been a permanent resident at the Seal Sanctuary since her move from Whipsnade Wildlife Park in October 2004.

Snoopy has had a bit of a journey from when she was born in January of 1981 at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland, at around three years old Snoopy moved to London where she shared a pool with a Harbour Seal, but sadly passed away in early 2004.

'We were contacted by Whipsnade who asked if we had room for another Grey seal, as seals do get lonely on their own. We arranged for the transport and she arrived in October 2004 and was put in to a nursery pool' said Tamara Cooper, Head of Seal Rehabilitation at the Sanctuary.

The plan was for Snoopy to spend a few days in the nursery pool before being transferred in to the Convalescent Pool to meet her new friends. After a few short days Snoopy was very keen to meet her new friends and the dividing gate was lifted and Snoopy headed towards the Convalescent Pool. All the other seals keen to welcome the new arrival rushed over to her when Snoopy let out a cry and headed back to the nursery pool.

'Since that day Snoopy refuses to go in to the Convalescent Pool even at feeding time she expects the Animal Care Team to come to her with her own bucket of fish. Winter time is when Snoopy gets really grumpy as we need her nursery pool for the rescued pups, so she has to move in to the larger pool. If the other seals get to close she mumbles and groans at them which can be heard all over the Sanctuary, which is why she has earned a nickname of a diva seal.' Added Tamara

Snoopy will be celebrating her birthday on the 29th and 30th January with lots of fishy treats, the Sanctuary is also offering anybody who turns 30 years old in 2011 to come and celebrate with Snoopy, with the first 20 people gaining free entry, proof of year of birth needed and fishy cake is optional.
